Consider the sheer audacity of a project designed to last 120 years. That’s the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. It is more than just a bridge. It’s a testament to engineering ambition.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is a 55-kilometer bridge-tunnel system. It links Hong Kong and Macau to Zhuhai. Zhuhai is a major city in the Pearl River Delta. This ambitious project includes a series of three cable-stayed bridges. It also has an undersea tunnel and four artificial islands. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the world’s longest sea crossing. It is also the longest open-sea fixed link.

Gordon Wu, the founder of Hopewell Holdings, first proposed the idea in the 1980s. He envisioned a link further north than the current design. Discussions stalled for years. Finally, construction began on December 15, 2009. The Hong Kong section started later in December 2011. This was due to legal challenges about the environmental impact.

The last bridge tower was erected on June 2, 2016. The final tunnel joint was installed on May 2, 2017. The Main Bridge was completed on July 6, 2017. The entire Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge project finished on February 6, 2018.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge consists of three main sections. The Main Bridge stretches for 29.6 km. The Hong Kong Link Road covers 12 km. The Zhuhai Link Road spans 13.4 km. The Main Bridge includes a 22.9-kilometer bridge and a 6.7-kilometer undersea tunnel. The Hong Kong Link Road connects the Main Bridge to the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities.

Interestingly, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge uses right-hand traffic. This differs from Hong Kong and Macau, which use left-hand traffic. Drivers switch sides using viaducts when entering and leaving the bridge.

Shuttle buses operate 24 hours a day. The journey across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge takes about 40 minutes. Despite its grand scale, using the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge with a private vehicle involves significant paperwork. This includes separate driving licenses and permits.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is part of a strategy. It aims to create an economic hub in the Pearl River Delta. While some criticize its usage and costs, the bridge saw a record 156,000 passenger trips on January 31, 2025.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge stands as a symbol of connection. It links three major cities and pushes the boundaries of engineering. It also sparks debate about its true impact. As you stand here, consider the vision, the challenges, and the lasting legacy of this colossal structure.
