Tucked away amidst the bustling energy of Hong Kong, lies the Laus’ Ancestral Hall, also known as the Liu Ancestral Hall or 劉氏宗祠 in Chinese. This seemingly unassuming structure, the 劉氏宗祠, holds within its walls a captivating narrative that spans over a thousand years, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Liu clan. Let’s step back in time to the Song Dynasty, where our story of the Laus’ Ancestral Hall begins. Liu Da Zong, a prominent figure of the Liu clan, established his roots in Pinghu, setting in motion a chain of events that would shape the family’s destiny. Over generations, the Liu family migrated from central China to Jiangxi and Fujian provinces, eventually making their way through Meilin Pass into Guangdong. They initially settled in Nanxiong, Zhuji Lane, before moving to Dongguan City and finally establishing themselves in Shenzhen’s Danzhutou. The Laus’ Ancestral Hall, the 劉氏宗祠, became a focal point for the clan, a place where family traditions were upheld, marriages and funerals were conducted, and important clan matters were discussed. But time, as it often does, took its toll. Many ancestral halls fell into disrepair, repurposed for other uses like schools, warehouses, or factories. By the turn of the 21st century, only the De Ci Tang, a single room within the Laus’ Ancestral Hall complex, remained intact. Yet, hope flickered anew. In the spring of 2017, restoration efforts began at the De Ci Tang, breathing life back into this historic structure. The surrounding buildings of the 劉氏宗祠 are now being transformed into a cultural museum, poised to showcase the rich heritage and traditions of Pinghu. Today, as you stand before the Laus’ Ancestral Hall, the 劉氏宗祠, you’re not just looking at a building. You’re witnessing a living embodiment of history, a symbol of resilience, and a testament to the enduring legacy of the Liu family in Hong Kong.
