What if I told you this futuristic, egg-shaped building holds the key to unlocking the universe? Right here, before you stands the Hong Kong Space Museum. Opened in 1980, the Hong Kong Space Museum is more than just a museum. It’s a gateway to the cosmos, a place where the mysteries of space are brought down to Earth. The Hong Kong Space Museum’s unique design, often likened to a giant pineapple bun by locals, houses the Stanley Ho Space Theatre. This theatre is home to the only planetarium in Hong Kong, offering a captivating glimpse into the night sky. The Hong Kong Space Museum boasts the first computerized planetarium in the world. This innovative technology allows for an incredibly realistic simulation of the cosmos. In the 2008-2009 financial year alone, the Hong Kong Space Museum welcomed nearly 590,000 visitors, eager to explore the wonders of space. Beyond the planetarium, the Hong Kong Space Museum also houses two thematic exhibition halls: the Hall of Space Science and the Hall of Astronomy. These halls are packed with interactive exhibits, making learning about space an engaging and fun experience for all ages. The museum also holds a piece of history: a Hong Kong flag that travelled aboard Shenzhou 1, China’s first unmanned spacecraft. Want to experience space travel firsthand? The Hong Kong Space Museum has a mock-up of the Space Shuttle orbiter’s nose and cockpit section. So, step inside the Hong Kong Space Museum and prepare to be amazed.
