“Orphans to officers” once echoed through these halls. Today, we stand before the Hong Kong Sea School, a place with a rich history. It transformed from a sanctuary for orphans to a well-known secondary school.

The Hong Kong Sea School’s story began in 1946. Mr. Brook Antony Bernacchi founded it. He wanted to provide a home and marine training for orphans after World War II. Imagine Hong Kong after the war. Many children were left without families. Bernacchi and other philanthropists created the “Children’s Camp”. It was under the “Hong Kong Juvenile Welfare Association”. This camp offered care and education to orphans. Resources were scarce. The children often went hungry.

In 1952, a new vision emerged. Ho Ming Wah and others suggested founding a naval training school. It would merge with the Children’s Camp. The existing school buildings were used. The school was initially named “Hong Kong Sea Training School and Children’s Camp.”

By 1959, the Hong Kong government recognized the school. It became a subsidized school. The name officially changed to “Hong Kong Sea School”. This name remains today. The student population grew. It increased from dozens to 300. The Hong Kong Jockey Club donated funds. This helped build the first teaching block. Typhoon Wanda struck in 1962. It destroyed the old rice store dormitories. The US aid association helped. They donated funds to build a new four-story dormitory.

During the 1960s and 70s, the Hong Kong Sea School flourished. Graduates joined the marine industry. Many obtained international captain’s licenses. In 1969, the school became a special education school. This allowed the school to hire qualified teachers. In 1976, the school offered maritime life-saving courses. These courses gave students internationally recognized qualifications.

The 1970s and 80s saw a boom in Hong Kong’s shipping industry. The Hong Kong Sea School graduates had excellent job prospects. Student numbers rose to 600. New facilities were needed. The school expanded with the help of the Beitrust Foundation.

As the economy changed in the 1980s, the shipping industry declined. Fewer students wanted to pursue maritime careers. The Hong Kong Sea School adapted. It introduced vocational courses in hospitality and business. In 1993, it became Hong Kong’s first practical secondary school. It aimed to equip students with skills for specific trades. The school still maintained its maritime traditions. This helped to build student character.

In 1997, the Hong Kong Sea School agreed with the government to transition. It would become a mainstream secondary school with boarding facilities. This change took effect in 2001. The school adopted “experiential education”. It combined traditional subjects with maritime training.

Today, the Hong Kong Sea School continues to evolve. It provides students with a well-rounded education. The school collaborates with various organizations. These include government departments and businesses. Graduates pursue careers in shipping, law enforcement, and hospitality. The Hong Kong Sea School stands as a testament to resilience. It is a beacon of opportunity for young people in Hong Kong. Its maritime spirit remains strong.
