Dedicated to preserving a crucial chapter in history, the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence stands as a testament to resilience and remembrance. Today, we explore the significance of this museum. It underscores Hong Kong’s role in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

The Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence was formerly known as the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence. It was officially converted on September 3, 2024. This date coincides with the Victory Day of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. The conversion highlights the museum’s renewed focus.

The Chief Executive, Mr. John Lee, emphasized the importance of this day. He stated that the Hong Kong SAR Government deeply respects the united front. It commemorates those who sacrificed their lives. The government is committed to promoting patriotic education. It aims to strengthen national pride and a sense of responsibility.

As a key site for patriotic education, the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence enhances public understanding. It particularly targets young people. The museum showcases the difficult years of wartime. It recognizes the contributions of martyrs through permanent and thematic exhibitions.

Currently, the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence features several galleries. These include the “Narrative of the War of Resistance,” “Join Hands to Resist Japanese Invasion,” “Japanese Invasion of Hong Kong,” and “Anti-Japanese Guerrillas behind Enemy Lines.” Collectively, they are known as the “War of Resistance Galleries.” These galleries display historical photos and artifacts. Multimedia programs illustrate the activities of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Independent Brigade of the East River Column. The museum recognizes the brigade’s significant contributions.

A notable exhibit is the Certificate of Commendation. The HKSAR Government presented it to the Hong Kong and Kowloon Independent Brigade of the East River Column. The exhibit includes the names of brigade members who died during the Japanese occupation from 1941 to 1945. These are displayed near the entrance.

The first thematic exhibition focuses on the East River Column’s activities in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. It is a collaboration between the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Shenzhen Municipality. The exhibition showcases the heroic sacrifices through historical materials.

Exhibits include a cloth bag and a revolver used by members of the East River Column. Newspapers published by the East River Column are also displayed as replicas. The “Tati Pictorial,” first published in Hong Kong in 1938, is another highlight. Visitors can view cartoon images from “Miscellaneous Memories of One Hundred Days in Dongjiang.” A commemorative medal marks the 70th Anniversary of the Victory. Oral history records from veterans add a personal touch.

To further develop the museum, the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence launched a year-long Artefact Collection Campaign. This encourages the public to donate items related to the War of Resistance. It also seeks items related to the Hong Kong and Kowloon Independent Brigade of the East River Column. These donations will support future exhibitions and research.

The Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence also organizes public programs. These include workshops, flag-raising ceremonies, and special museum days. Collaborations with the Hong Kong Public Libraries offer outreach programs. These programs aim to engage the public, especially young people, with the history of the War of Resistance.
