Established in 1914, the Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants’ Association has witnessed over a century of Hong Kong’s history. Here at its former headquarters on Wylie Road, you can almost feel the weight of its legacy. The Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants’ Association was founded by prominent figures like Ng Kwok-ying, Chiang Kai-shek, and Lo Cheung-shiu. It quickly became the largest civil servants union in Hong Kong. At its peak, the Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants’ Association boasted over 68,000 members, mostly retired civil servants. The association not only provided welfare benefits but also actively voiced opinions on civil servant salaries and other issues to the Hong Kong government. The Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants’ Association has always advocated for the rights and welfare of its members, playing a vital role in shaping Hong Kong’s civil service. They have advocated for salary adjustments, medical benefits, and protection against verbal abuse and violence. This organization has played a crucial role in ensuring a stable and efficient civil service in Hong Kong. Beyond negotiations, the Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants’ Association offered a range of member benefits. They provided discounts on goods and services. They also organized recreational activities. The old headquarters building once housed sports facilities like a badminton court, half a basketball court, a volleyball court, a banquet hall, and a parking lot. Sadly, the building, which stood for over 40 years, was demolished in 2021. While the physical structure is gone, the Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants’ Association’s influence and history continue to resonate within Hong Kong’s community.
