Founded in 1978 by Father John Meyendorff, Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Reston, Virginia, has a unique story. It began during Father Meyendorff’s sabbatical from St. Vladimir’s Seminary. He was working at Harvard University’s Dumbarton Oaks Research Library in Georgetown. A small group of Orthodox Christians in the Reston-Sterling area desired an English-language parish. Father Meyendorff helped bring this dream to life. The church held its first services and celebrated its first Holy Week and Pascha, marking a strong beginning. Holy Trinity Orthodox Church aimed to unite Orthodox Christians and introduce others to the faith through English services. The church prides itself on its diverse, non-ethnic congregation. It strives to embody the Orthodox Catholic way in Protestant America. A key element of worship at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church is singing. The congregation sings a mix of melodies from the Orthodox world. These include Greek, Arab, Romanian, and Slav melodies. They believe this practice fosters understanding and brings the Sunday Liturgy closer to its intended meaning as a sacrifice of praise. Father Paul N Harrilchak has served the Holy Trinity faithful since 1978. He has a background in the humanities and studied at the Catholic University of America and St. Vladimir’s Theological Seminary. He has written books on the Liturgy and Confession, drawing inspiration from figures like Fathers Schmemann and Meyendorff. The church offers a Reston Catechetical School, post-Liturgy refreshments, and observances of major feasts and Vespers. They also hold Lenten services with St. Luke’s Serbian Church in McLean. Confessions generally follow a communal rite. Baptism and Marriage require parish membership. Learning opportunities abound, including Scripture study, film screenings, and instructional courses on the Orthodox Catholic faith. A monthly newsletter keeps parishioners informed. Holy Trinity Orthodox Church has a history of supporting those in need, both locally and internationally. The church owns two acres in Sterling, Virginia, with plans for a parish center.
