Completed in 1957 Holy Spirit Catholic Church stands proudly. It’s a testament to faith and community. The church wasn’t built overnight. It started with a dream. A need for a spiritual home. This was in 1956. Agincourt and surrounding areas were booming. Around 400 Catholic families needed a place to worship. Cardinal McGuigan answered their prayers. He established the parish. Father Thomas Robert Harding was appointed to lead.
Finding a space for Mass was the first hurdle. The Tom O’Shanter Golf Club Clubhouse generously hosted the first services. Three Masses were needed on Sundays to accommodate the growing congregation. Father Harding enlisted the help of Reverend Bernard Mahoney. They moved to the Agincourt Community Hall. It was better but still not ideal. The chairs were hard on the concrete floor. The noise was distracting.
A new church was the ultimate goal. A fundraising campaign began in March 1957. The initial target was $75000. The final cost was projected to be $200000. Over 100 volunteers stepped up. A telephone campaign raised funds quickly. Door-to-door canvassing collected pledges. Architect Jean M. Petrucci designed the modern Gothic church. It could seat approximately 600 parishioners.
Construction started on July 4 1957. By December the building was finished. The dream had become reality. The first Mass was celebrated before Christmas. Holy Spirit Catholic Church opened its doors. It served as a beacon of hope and faith for the community. The parishioners’ dedication and unwavering belief brought this spiritual home to life. Their efforts transformed a vision into a tangible reality. This building became much more than bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of the community’s strength and resilience.
