Why did a group of young people decide to establish a church in post-World War II Washington D.C.? Here at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Potomac, Maryland, that story unfolds. Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church wasn’t always a church. It began in 1948 as an American Carpatho-Russian Youth chapter. Young people, many relocating to the D.C. area after the war, sought to preserve their faith and heritage. They formed the Orthodox Greek Catholic Congregation with about 25 members. Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church truly began its life on September 21, 1958. The first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the Resurrection Chapel of the Washington National Cathedral. Sixty people attended this inaugural service. Afterward, the first parish meeting was held. They chose the name “Church of the Holy Resurrection” in honor of the chapel that had hosted them. For nine years, the National Cathedral generously provided chapel space to the fledgling parish at no cost. In 1965, Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church purchased a house on 16th Street NW and transformed it into a church and rectory. Parishioners dedicated their time and effort, completing much of the renovation themselves. Two years later, in August 1967, the renovated church was dedicated. The congregation continued to grow. In 1976, they purchased two acres of land in Potomac, Maryland, for a new church building. A “Brick Fund” raised $10,000 to begin construction. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in February 1979. Parishioners braved freezing temperatures and harsh winds to witness the start of their new church. The church was built in the traditional Carpathian style. On September 23, 1980, the cornerstone was blessed with 225 people present. Christmas Eve 1980, according to the Julian Calendar, marked the first services in the completed church. The image of falling snow and the sound of carols resonated deeply with those present. Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church has thrived ever since.
