Doesn’t it evoke a sense of peace standing before the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family? This shrine stands as a testament to faith heritage and community. It is a beacon for Ukrainian Catholics in the United States.

Let’s delve into the story of this remarkable shrine. The Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family began in 1949. Bishop Constantine Bohachevsky established Holy Family Parish. He sought to serve the growing Ukrainian Greek Catholic population in Washington D.C. Before this parish Ukrainians had to travel to Baltimore or Manassas for their spiritual needs.

Fr. Vladimir Wozniak became the parish’s first pastor. He suggested naming the parish Holy Family. He believed the Holy Family would help overcome the difficulties of organizing a new parish. It would also accommodate the displaced persons arriving in the nation’s capital.

The parish grew. Over the next 30 years it relocated four times. Finally it found its permanent home. This location overlooks the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Metropolitan Ambrose Senyshyn recognized the need for a significant church in Washington. In 1975 he supported the building of a new memorial church.

Bishop Basil H. Losten officially named the project. In 1977 he declared it “The Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family.” Pope John Paul II blessed the cornerstone of the Lower Church in 1979. The Great Upper Church was completed in 1999.

The Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family has become a visible symbol. It represents the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the nation’s capital. It is a place for Ukrainian Catholics to gather when they visit Washington D.C. The shrine is dedicated to Jesus Mary and Joseph. It serves as a place of worship pilgrimage and reconciliation.
