Have you ever seen a cathedral that resembles an eight-pointed star? The Holy Family Cathedral in St. John’s, Antigua is a spectacular example of modern church architecture. Throughout the 19th century, the Catholic community grew, spurred by the arrival of indentured workers from Madeira and immigrants from Lebanon, Syria, Dominica, and the Dominican Republic.
The first Catholic Church in Antigua was built in 1869 at the corner of Independence Avenue and Church Street. It was later replaced by a larger structure in 1909, which served as a pro-cathedral until the diocese of St. John’s – Basseterre was established in 1971.
The current Holy Family Cathedral is the crowning achievement of the Catholic Church in Antigua. Its octagonal design, inspired by post-Vatican II Latin Rite, is a testament to its commitment to the modern world. As you stand before the cathedral, you’ll notice its distinctive central tower adorned with a cross – the largest external church cross in Antigua. You may hear the electronic synthesized bells chiming on the hour, before Mass, and at the end of funerals. The cathedral is not just a place of worship but a gathering place for the community, especially on special occasions like the feast of the Epiphany and the feast of the Assumption, when Sunday Mass is celebrated according to the Byzantine Rite.
