Wondering how Holy Family Canossian School came to be? It is a story of dedication and vision. The Canossian Sisters, who prioritize education for girls, started it all.
In 1938, Bishop Valtorta saw the need. He invited the Canossian Sisters to Kowloon City. By 1940, the Holy Family Convent opened. A dispensary joined it. Then, the Holy Family School welcomed its first students in August 1940.
But, progress halted in December 1941. The Japanese occupation forced the school to close.
After the war, in 1953, construction started again. This time it was for the Holy Family School at Junction Road. Later, in the mid-1960s, the Canossian Sisters planned a school for the graduates of Holy Family Canossian School. Construction began in August 1970. By October 1972, the school stood ready.
Holy Family Canossian School officially opened on December 21, 1973. Bishop Peter Lei blessed the school. Mr. N. M. Ho, Deputy Director of Education, officiated the inauguration. Father Columbo shared the school’s history. The school song was created in 1973 under the leadership of Sister Margaret Lee.
In 1972, Holy Family Canossian School started with 400 students in 10 classes. Fifteen teachers guided them. Each year brought growth.
Sister Marie Remedios helped establish the Student Association in 1981. The Past Students’ Association began in 1976. It later became the Alumnae Association.
Holy Family Canossian School celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1996-1997. There was a mass, an open day and a show. A special publication marked the 10th anniversary in 1981-1982.
The Parent-Teacher Association began in 1992. Sister Cynthia Chan led the effort.
The school continued to improve. The Multi-media Learning Centre opened in 2002. In 2006, a new building added space. It was named Foundress Building.
The Self-directed Learning Scheme started in 2009. The school celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2006-2007.
The Chinese Language Centre opened in 2015. A STEM Room appeared in 2017. It supports science and tech education.
The school library was renovated in 2021. An IT Innovation Lab was added in 2022. It focuses on environmental protection and aerospace.
Holy Family Canossian School marked its 50th anniversary in 2022.
Since April 2023, Holy Family Canossian School has a sister school. It is Pingshan New Area Foreign Language School in Shenzhen.
