Imagine endless dunes. These dunes once stretched as far as the eye could see where the Holon Sand Park stands today.

Welcome to Holon Sand Park. This isn’t just any park. It is a symbol of Holon’s transformation. Holon rose from barren sand dunes. It became a sophisticated city.

Let’s step back in time. The early 20th century saw only rolling sands here. The occasional sycamore tree broke the view. In 1924, pioneers began to settle. Shlomo Green, a Jaffa merchant, bought land. It was considered the outskirts of Tel Aviv then. By 1931, Green had brought families. They built a synagogue and homes.

These weren’t wealthy people. Green cared for them. The settlement was known as the Green neighborhood. Access was by horse-drawn carriage. Green bought a bus called the Blue Bird. By 1945, 140 people lived here.

Severe housing shortages in Tel Aviv drove growth. Four more neighborhoods arose. These were Moledet, Am, Kiryat Avoda and Agrobank. Eight Yemenite families settled Moledet in 1930. They built a synagogue and a tanning factory.

Agrobank was established in 1934. It was more affluent. It had better infrastructure. Mirenburg and Yavetz built roads and electricity. They invited Arieh Shenkar to move his textile factory.

Kiryat Avoda was a socialist settlement. The Am neighborhood was founded in 1935. It was between Green and Kiryat Avoda. Arab attacks were frequent. The Hagana defended these neighborhoods. They stored weapons at the Hosmasa fort.

The watchman’s wife warned of British patrols. She hung colored laundry on a tower. In June 1940, the neighborhoods united. They chose the name Holon. It was inspired by a city in the Book of Joshua. It also means dunes in Hebrew.

Holon absorbed immigrants over decades. In 1965, it gave sanctuary to Samaritans. By 1993, Holon declined. Moti Sasson became mayor. He revitalized the city.

Holon was rebranded as the Children’s City. Culture was key. New institutions attracted visitors. The Children’s Museum and Story Gardens became famous. The Mediatheque hub brought museums and theaters.

The Cartoon Museum is the first of its kind in Israel. City of Sands documents Holon’s history. Holon is recognized internationally. It is a cultural center now.

Today, Holon Sand Park reminds us of the city’s roots. It is a modern green space. It contrasts with Holon’s sandy origins. It shows how far Holon has come. Holon is truly a city that rose from the sands.
