“Did you know this path beneath our feet is more than just a trail? It’s a living testament to time. Welcome to the Hohlweg am Johannesberg.

For centuries, this unique sunken lane has carved its way into Vienna’s southern edge. Imagine a time long before cars when farmers and their animals traversed this very ground. Their constant passage gradually eroded the soft loess soil. This created the distinctive sunken path we see today, the Hohlweg am Johannesberg.

This isn’t just any path. It is a natural monument. The Hohlweg am Johannesberg is a haven for rare and specialized species. It is a unique habitat within the city. The loess walls provide a home to plants and animals. Many of them can only be found here in Vienna.

Think of the Ice Age. Strong winds carried loess. Loess is a loose yellowish-gray sediment. It formed dunes up to 30 meters high. This created the Johannesberg. The soil is very fertile. It stores water well. Plants can root deeply. It supplies groundwater.

The Hohlweg am Johannesberg is home to the Steppen-Wolfsmilch. It is also home to the Sand-Lotwurz and Österreich-Salbei. These plants are rare. They make plant lovers’ hearts beat faster. These endangered species are only known from the Johannesberg in Vienna.

Seventy-six wild bee species have been found in this small area. It was declared a natural monument in 1990. Some bee species use the loess walls of the Hohlweg. They dig holes to create nests. The Ehrenpreis-Sandbiene needs pollen from Ehrenpreis species. This wild bee is very rare in Austria. It only lives where Ehrenpreis grows. It also needs open soil to dig its nests.

The Hohlweg am Johannesberg once had extensive dry grassland vegetation. These were pastures where farm animals grazed. The construction of a transformer station changed the land. Much of the species-rich dry grassland disappeared. Fortunately, a remnant has survived in and around the old Hohlweg.

The city of Vienna supports the preservation of this natural oasis. The slopes are maintained by the city’s environmental protection department. The base is mowed with a mower. Volunteers gather the cut material. Then it is prepared for removal by the city’s forestry and agricultural operations.

This Hohlweg am Johannesberg is not just a path. It is a story etched in earth. It is a sanctuary for life. A reminder of the delicate balance between nature and time.”
