Why is there a monument to a blacksmith in the middle of Höhenhaus? You might ask yourself that. This unassuming monument, tucked away in the Wupperplatz, tells a fascinating tale. It is dedicated to the “Grinkenschmied,” the most loyal of the Heinzelmännchen of Cologne.
Höhenhaus, you see, became his refuge after the other Heinzelmännchen were driven out of Cologne. According to legend, the Grinkenschmied found a new home here on the Emberg. From there, he could at least see the spires of the Cologne Cathedral in the distance. In gratitude for his new home, he tirelessly helped the farming families of Höhenhaus with the harvest. He even crafted their “Grinken,” the iron fittings for cartwheels. This act of kindness earned him a permanent place in Höhenhaus’s heart, hence the monument we see today.
