Seven thousand eight hundred and sixty-two souls. That’s how many people called Högdalen home in 2006. Imagine their lives unfolding within this High Valley. Högdalen a suburban district in South Stockholm boasts a history that stretches back further than its modern layout.

Long before the metro line connected Högdalen to Stockholm City Centre in 1954 a lone farmstead stood here. This was the original Högdalen a humble torp nestled in a valley surrounded by higher ground. Its name hints at the very landscape we see today a valley elevated by surrounding hills. That original Högdalen torp burned down around 1960. But its name lives on.

The town planning for Högdalen was approved in 1951. Inspired by the ABC-city Vällingby it was designed as a self-contained community. By 1956 most of the buildings were completed. Today Högdalen retains much of its original character. Yet its cultural heart the commercial area near the metro has changed. Notice the striking neon rooster perched atop an apartment block. This bright bird is a local landmark. It shares the spotlight with a golden rooster atop the local church.

Högdalen’s unique charm extends beyond its architectural details. The independent theatre group Fria Teatern calls Högdalen home. Its main stage is located here. Högdalen’s identity is entwined with its residents. Their political preferences lean strongly towards the Social Democrats and the Left Party. This preference reflected the community’s social fabric in 2006.

The area is split between residential and commercial zones around the metro station. Further east lies an industrial area and a landfill. Unemployment in 2006 sat at a modest 4.9%. Högdalen’s story is one of thoughtful planning and community spirit. This suburban area with its unique landmarks including its iconic roosters is a vibrant piece of Stockholm.

As you walk through Högdalen feel the pulse of this community. See the echoes of its past. Observe the modern life that thrives here. A quiet suburban charm complements Stockholm’s dynamic energy. Högdalen exemplifies a harmonious blend of nature and urban planning. Remember that the next time you see that neon rooster gleaming brightly. It stands as a symbol of Högdalen’s unique spirit. A testament to the enduring legacy of the High Valley.
