Hodan Nalayeh Secondary School opened its doors in 1989. Initially named Vaughan Secondary School it served a large community. It was named after the city of Vaughan itself. However this name held a dark secret. Benjamin Vaughan the city’s namesake owned slaves in Jamaica. After much debate and protest the school was renamed. It now proudly bears the name of Hodan Nalayeh. She was a Somali-Canadian journalist known for her inspiring work. Tragically she was murdered in 2019. Renaming the school honored her legacy.
The school boasts a modern design. Three floors house classrooms a library and even its own radio station. 90.7 RAV-FM is one of only four licensed high school radio stations in all of Ontario. It’s a unique feature. It reflects the school’s commitment to innovation and creativity. The school also offers a French immersion program. Students can earn a French Immersion Certificate upon successful completion of the program. There is also an Advanced Placement program. Students can take AP courses in Science English History and Math. Many students have gone on to achieve great things. Notable alumni include NBA players Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Andrew Nembhard. Professional golfer Adam Hadwin also graduated from Hodan Nalayeh Secondary School.
