Picture the Hochburg a Celtic mountain fort rising 90 meters above the Kuttbach valley. Its dramatic location on a steep plateau provided natural defenses. Imagine the Hochburg in its prime a formidable structure divided into three distinct sections. There’s a long forecourt protected by a low wall and ditch. Then a mighty inner wall almost six meters high stands guard. Finally perched at the east end is the upper castle possibly added much later in the medieval period.

The Hochburg’s main section likely originated in the 5th century BC. The sheer cliffs on the northeast and south sides eliminated the need for walls. Only the accessible western slope required artificial protection. There you can still trace a gap in the wall a slightly offset opening that was once the gate.

Notice the eastern tip of this plateau. It’s separated from the rest by a natural fissure now widened into a ditch. Behind this rocky barrier archaeologists have unearthed remnants of mortared walls and medieval shards. These may be linked to buildings documented in 926 AD. It’s a fascinating blend of ages.

From the Hochburg’s highest point the view is breathtaking. On a clear day you can see far beyond the Kyll valley. The southern Moselle River and the rising Hunsrück mountains are visible. It’s a strategic location a true Hochburg a high castle offering both shelter and commanding views. So soak in the history the landscape the significance of this magnificent Hochburg.
