Behold this mighty propeller. It’s more than just metal and gears. This is the heart of a legend a piece of New Zealand naval history. This propeller belonged to the HMNZS Wellington a Leander-class frigate. It served with distinction first as HMS Bacchante in the UK Navy for twelve years then for eighteen years in the Royal New Zealand Navy.

The HMNZS Wellington wasn’t just any ship. She patrolled the Falklands exclusion zone after the war. She participated in peacekeeping efforts in Bougainville. She even helped enforce UN sanctions in the Persian Gulf. Think of the sailors who served aboard her. Their dedication their courage their stories are woven into the very metal of this propeller.

Now this remarkable propeller is not in a museum. This is no dusty relic. The Rotary Club of Wellington donated it in 2006. Here it sits as a poignant reminder of the HMNZS Wellington’s service. It’s located between Te Papa and Waitangi Park near a wooden bridge. A fitting tribute in a beautiful setting.

The ship herself met a different fate. Decommissioned in 1999 the HMNZS Wellington was deliberately sunk in 2005. Now she rests on the seabed near Island Bay creating an artificial reef a vibrant underwater ecosystem. Scuba divers explore her remains. She continues to serve in a new way. A testament to her strength and endurance.

So gaze upon this propeller. Feel its weight its history. It speaks of voyages across the ocean. It echoes with tales of bravery and dedication. It’s a symbol of the HMNZS Wellington a ship that continues to inspire awe and respect. Remember her legacy. Remember the men and women who served aboard her. This propeller is their legacy.
