In the heart of Vancouver’s bustling harbor, HMCS Discovery stands proudly. It isn’t a ship plowing through the waves, but a “stone frigate,” a land-based naval establishment. HMCS Discovery has witnessed a century of history unfold, from wartime service to peacekeeping missions. This “stone frigate” takes its name from the HMS Discovery, the vessel captained by George Vancouver as he charted the northwestern coast of North America. The current HMCS Discovery, located on Deadman Island, has served as a vital training center and recruitment hub for the Royal Canadian Navy since World War II. Originally established at Stanley Park Barracks in 1941, HMCS Discovery relocated to its current location in 1944. During World War II, HMCS Discovery became a cornerstone of Canada’s naval efforts. It provided nearly 8,000 personnel, including 372 officers, 6,974 ratings, and 650 members of the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS). Sadly, 61 members from HMCS Discovery made the ultimate sacrifice during the war. Following the war, it served as a discharge center for thousands of returning service members. HMCS Discovery’s role evolved. It continued its training mission and became the home of several cadet units. Its personnel have been deployed to various global hotspots, including Korea, the Persian Gulf, and Afghanistan. HMCS Discovery played a vital role in security operations during the 1997 APEC meeting and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Today, HMCS Discovery continues to serve as a training facility. It also houses the Western Region Diving Centre, coordinating port inspection diving teams. The base frequently hosts foreign vessels visiting Vancouver, acting as a symbol of international cooperation. HMCS Discovery also shares its grounds with the Naval Museum of Vancouver, preserving the rich naval heritage of the region. The badge of HMCS Discovery carries a unique story. Designed as a rebus, it features a gold disc atop a shake-fork resembling the letter “Y,” a playful nod to the phrase “disc over Y.” HMCS Discovery stands as a testament to Canada’s naval history. It is a place where past and present intertwine, reminding us of the courage, service, and unwavering dedication of those who have served.
