Launched by Lady Slim wife of the Governor-General HMAS Vampire glided into Sydney Harbour in 1956. This wasn’t just any ship. HMAS Vampire was a Daring-class destroyer built right here on Cockatoo Island. She was a marvel of engineering the first all-welded hull constructed in Australia. Aluminium was used extensively a testament to innovative shipbuilding.

For nearly three decades HMAS Vampire served the Royal Australian Navy. Her career wasn’t defined by fierce battles. Instead she patrolled the seas of South East Asia. She participated in exercises with allies like the US and French navies. She even escorted HMAS Sydney on voyages to Vietnam. A unique detail not often mentioned is her role during Queen Elizabeth II’s 1977 visit. HMAS Vampire provided escort for the Royal Yacht Britannia.

HMAS Vampire wasn’t just a warship. She was a floating city. Imagine life aboard. Crews of 320 men navigated the globe. They slept in cramped quarters ate in shared messes. The ship boasted engine rooms a hospital a bridge. Even gun turrets and radio rooms are preserved.

Later in her service HMAS Vampire was refitted as a training ship. She continued to serve until her decommissioning in 1986. It’s remarkable that she sailed 808026 nautical miles over her lifetime. This incredible vessel then became a museum ship. The Australian National Maritime Museum now preserves her. She’s a testament to Australian shipbuilding and naval history.

Today you stand before HMAS Vampire. A silent giant. She witnessed significant moments in history. She continues to share stories of dedication bravery. Her legacy lives on. This is more than just a ship. It’s a symbol of Australia’s rich maritime heritage.
