Built in 1882 this terraced hillside is the HKCCCU Pok Fu Lam Road Cemetery. This is the Hong Kong Chinese Christian Churches Union Pok Fu Lam Road Cemetery. It is a place of rest. It is a testament to lives lived. It stands as a landmark in Pok Fu Lam.
The HKCCCU Pok Fu Lam Road Cemetery is managed by the Hong Kong Chinese Christian Churches Union. This union was crucial in the cemetery’s establishment. They sought government approval in 1882. The cemetery expanded from Pok Fu Lam Road. It grew downwards towards Victoria Road. Parts of it now lie beyond Victoria Road.
Many notable figures rest here. Families of Hong Kong’s four major department stores are buried here. These include Sincere Department Store and Wing On Department Store. Famous author Xu Dishan rests here too. Revolutionary Tse Tsan-tai is also interred here. Musician Ho Tai-sor found his final resting place here as well.
Among the notable burials is Au Fung-Chi. He was Sun Yat-sen’s teacher of Chinese literature. Wang Chung-yik the first Chinese professor in Hong Kong is buried here. Entao Liao brother of Liao Zhongkai also rests here. Zeng Guangshan a former minister for National Defense of the People’s Republic of China is interred here as well. Yung Park a senior pastor of The Church of Christ in China China Congregational Church rests here too. Eddie Hui the last Commissioner of the Royal Hong Kong Police is buried here.
Considered to be a magnificent view the cemetery is a terraced hillside. Staircases interconnect the terraces. This design resembles an otherworldly amphitheater.
