What secrets lie hidden beneath the unassuming facade of Hjorthagen? Although today it appears as a tranquil residential district, Hjorthagen harbors a rich and unexpected past. Believe it or not, this peaceful neighborhood was once a royal hunting ground. In the late 16th century, King Johan III envisioned a grand djurgård, a royal game park. He introduced deer and reindeer to the area, enclosing them within a vast, twenty-kilometer fence. This marked the beginning of Hjorthagen’s life as a royal menagerie. Over time, the fence deteriorated, and by the 19th century, a new one was erected, specifically around what we know as Hjorthagen today. This area, once teeming with royal game, witnessed a dramatic transformation in the late 19th century. Stockholm city purchased Hjorthagen and embarked on an ambitious industrial development plan. The iconic Värtagasverket, a gasworks, and Värtaverket, a power station, became prominent landmarks, forever altering the landscape of Hjorthagen. Hjorthagen transitioned from a tranquil hunting ground to a bustling industrial hub. This shift led to the construction of the first workers’ barracks in 1909, known as “Gula husen,” or the “Yellow Houses,” a testament to the changing social fabric of the area. Today, remnants of Hjorthagen’s industrial past coexist with modern residential buildings. The gasworks may stand silent, but its presence serves as a reminder of Hjorthagen’s fascinating journey through time.
