From this sturdy square tower did shepherds once watch their flocks? The Hirtenturm stands before you a testament to Würzburg’s rich history. This isn’t just any tower. It’s a survivor a piece of Würzburg’s medieval past. Originally called the Roren it was a round tower part of the city’s fortifications around 1200. Imagine the Roren a stately structure so impressive that the city of Ochsenfurt wanted to copy it in 1504.

The Bauernkrieg the German Peasants’ War in 1525 brought destruction. The Roren along with a section of the city wall was demolished. In its place a humbler four-sided tower was built. This became known as the Neue Letz the New End. The city always needed money so they rented out every usable space. In 1548 the Neue Letz itself was rented out for four florins.

Then came 1641. The southwestern corner of Würzburg needed strengthening. The Hirtenturmschanze a fortification was built. The Hirtenturm itself was significantly expanded in 1642. It acquired its present form. Early in the 18th century Balthasar Neumann a renowned architect incorporated the tower into the Alte Infanteriekaserne the Old Infantry Barracks. It served as a prison a Soldatenstock.

World War II brought more devastation. The barracks were heavily damaged in a bombing raid. The ruins were cleared away. Only then was the Hirtenturm freed. It was rebuilt to its original form. The Hirtenturm wasn’t destroyed. It survived.

Today the Hirtenturm serves as the headquarters for the 1. KaGe Elferrat Würzburg 1935 e.V a carnival association. Think of the history that has unfolded within its walls. Shepherds watching their flocks. Prisoners enduring harsh conditions. A carnival club celebrating. This tower is not merely a landmark. It is a living story. It’s a reminder of resilience change and the enduring spirit of Würzburg.
