Imagine a UFO landed softly on the National Mall. That is kind of what people thought when the Hirshhorn Museum opened.
Hello everyone! Today, we are standing before the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. It is a unique place dedicated to modern and contemporary art.
The Hirshhorn Museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution. It stands halfway between the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol. This location marks a key point in the city’s design. Pierre L’Enfant planned this axis back in 1791.
Now, let’s talk about how the Hirshhorn Museum came to be. In the late 1930s, Congress wanted an art museum on the National Mall. At the time, the National Gallery of Art focused on older European art. World War II delayed the project.
Joseph H. Hirshhorn was a successful businessman. He made a fortune in uranium mining. Hirshhorn began collecting art. His collection grew to include classic French Impressionism. It also featured works by living artists.
In 1962, the Guggenheim Museum displayed Hirshhorn’s sculpture collection. This event put Hirshhorn on the international art scene. Institutions from around the world wanted his collection. President Lyndon B. Johnson convinced Hirshhorn to donate it to the United States.
In 1966, Congress established the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Joseph Hirshhorn donated much of his art. He also gave 1 million toward construction. The Hirshhorn Museum opened in 1974.
Hirshhorn spoke at the opening. He said he was honored to give his art to the American people. He felt it was a small repayment for the opportunities the nation had given him.
The Hirshhorn Museum building is an attraction itself. Architect Gordon Bunshaft designed it. It is a cylinder raised on four large legs. A fountain sits in the central courtyard. Some people compared it to a bunker. Others called it a gas tank.
The Hirshhorn Museum has a large collection. It includes works by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. You can also find pieces by Mary Cassatt and Jackson Pollock. The sculpture garden features works by Auguste Rodin and Alexander Calder.
Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree is a permanent installation in the Sculpture Garden. People from all over the world have added wishes to it. In 2019, Barbara and Aaron Levine donated their Marcel Duchamp collection to the museum.
Melissa Chiu is the current director of the Hirshhorn Museum. She is a scholar of contemporary Chinese art. Chiu oversaw the museum’s 40th anniversary celebration.
The Hirshhorn Museum has faced challenges. In 2009, there was a plan to build an inflatable structure called the “Bloomberg Bubble.” The project was controversial. It ultimately led to the resignation of the director.
The Hirshhorn Museum continues to evolve. It presents new works by emerging artists. The museum also hosts public programs. These programs invite innovators in art, design, and technology.
