The Seegrotte Hinterbrühl, a vast underground lake, lies beneath this very hill. The waters shimmer in the dim light, reflecting the echoes of its long and fascinating history. A reminder of Vienna’s rich past and industrial might, the Seegrotte was once part of a thriving gypsum mine. In 1912, a blast to expand the mine brought about a catastrophic event. Millions of gallons of water flooded the underground chambers, swallowing the entire mine and creating the largest subterranean lake in Europe. The water is fed by seven springs, creating a beautiful and mysterious landscape that remains untouched by the outside world. Before the water swallowed the mine, the Seegrotte hosted a miners’ chapel dedicated to St. Barbara, patron saint of miners. It stands as a testament to the men and women who toiled in the depths of the earth, seeking the gypsum that would bring prosperity to the region. The chapel is an integral part of the tour. Visitors can still gaze upon its altar adorned with the miners’ greeting “Glück Auf” – signifying good luck. During World War II, the very same tunnels that housed the miners’ chapel were converted into a factory for the Heinkel He 162 Salamander jet fighter. Political prisoners from across Europe were brought to this underground prison, forced to work tirelessly, building parts for the fighter plane in a shadowy, clandestine operation. Unfortunately, many perished during this time. Today, the Seegrotte Hinterbrühl serves as a powerful reminder of both the fragility of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. It invites visitors to explore the beauty and history, while reflecting on the lives and sacrifices of those who came before.
