Did you know that Hin Keng Estate’s name echoes a rich history? Standing before this impressive collection of buildings imagine the bustling lives that have unfolded here. Hin Keng Estate wasn’t always a planned residential area. Its story begins long before the concrete and glass. It’s named after the nearby villages Hin Tin Sheung Keng Hau and Ha Keng Hau. These villages nestled along Hin Keng Street have deep roots.

These villages weren’t always there. In the 1920s three Hakka clans the Yeung the Law and the So relocated to Hin Tin. Their original home Shek Lei Pui Valley was flooded to create a reservoir. Imagine the upheaval the journey the wrench of leaving ancestral lands. Approximately 80 people from 26 houses made the move. They were drawn by the promise of income from the area’s forests. This wasn’t just resettlement it was a fresh start. A gamble on a new future.

The ancestral halls of these clans are a remarkable sight. They stand connected a testament to shared history and resilience. Listed as Grade III historic buildings they are a reminder of the past. A past that helps understand the present. The buildings have stood the test of time. They survived even a significant demolition in 1982 when 600 structures were removed to make way for expansion. 167 families were relocated.

Hin Keng Estate itself opened in April 1986. It boasts 8 buildings and over 5800 residential units. Its location offers convenient access to public transport. It is just a short walk from the MTR. The area’s school network and school districts are also well-established.

Today Hin Keng Estate stands as a vibrant community. It is a place where history and modernity coexist. The story of the three Hakka clans is a reminder of its past.
