“Salesian Church” rings through Himonya 1. It marks a place of faith and community. It’s more than just a church. It is a testament to history and devotion.
Himonya 1 is home to the Himonya Catholic Church. It is dedicated to St. Mary of Edo. The church was established on September 5, 1948. The Salesian Fathers of Don Bosco founded it. They chose Himonya in Meguro-ku for their Tokyo missionary base.
The first building was simple. It had a chapel and a rectory. Father Dal Fior, the first pastor, celebrated Mass. He reached out to the local community. A kindergarten opened in 1949. The mission grew quickly. The chapel became too small.
In 1954, the present church was built. During construction, a holy picture was found. It depicted Our Lady of Edo. The picture was from Father Giovanni Battista Sidotti’s belongings. He was a missionary who died in an Edo prison in 1714.
The church was dedicated to Our Lady of Edo. The original picture was displayed for four months. A replica sits in the right chapel today. Italian marbles give the interior serenity. Brother L. Ferrari created the murals and frescoes. Stained glass windows show the life of Jesus Christ.
The Himonya Catholic Church is also known as Salezio Kyokai. It runs an active Sunday School. Father Dal Fior, a musician, started a strong music program. The church choir still flourishes today.
In February 1967, the Salesian Church became an independent parish. The community blossomed. Groups like the “Joseph-kai” and the Women’s group formed. A Social Welfare Group supports the needy. They aid the Tetere Church in Guadalcanal.
The church focuses on youth activities. Every Sunday, 150 children gather for catechesis. They play games and sports. The playground is open to all.
The Himonya Catholic Church provides facilities for the handicapped. There are barrier-free entrances. Restrooms are equipped for handicapped use.
To get here, take the Tokyu bus No. 1 from Meguro Station. Get off at Salezio Kyokai bus stop. By train, it’s a 15-minute walk from Toritsu-Daigaku Station. By car, go 3.2 kilometers from Meguro Station to Himonya Intersection.
