Established in 1882 Hillsborough High School stands proudly on North Central Avenue. It’s the oldest public high school in Hillsborough County Florida. This imposing Gothic Revival building completed in 1928 has witnessed a century of history. Its red brick facade and towering clock tower are iconic landmarks in the Seminole Heights neighborhood.

More than just a school Hillsborough High boasts a rich tapestry of traditions. The school colors red and black symbolize heart and soul. Every Friday students proudly wear these colors demonstrating school spirit. A cherished tradition is the Terrier Creed written by the Class of 1957. This unique creed is a testament to the school’s values.

The school’s history is filled with fascinating anecdotes. In 2003 documents discovered in the 1911 cornerstone revealed the school’s true founding date. The first graduating class in 1886 consisted of just four students. Mrs Mary Cuscaden served as the school’s first principal. One of the original 1886 diplomas is still preserved in the school’s vault.

Hillsborough High School played a significant role in the city’s development. It was the first home of the University of Tampa from 1931 to 1933. The school’s clock tower received a significant upgrade in 1949. Students funded the clock in honor of Hillsborough alumni killed in World War II. A plaque under the tower bears the names of these fallen heroes.

The school’s athletic legacy is equally impressive. The Hillsborough Terriers football team boasts one of the oldest rivalries in Tampa Bay. Their Thanksgiving Day rivalry with Plant High School ended in 1974. The Terriers’ football field is named after Marcelino Huerta a legendary coach. Hillsborough High also excels in other sports including baseball basketball track and field and golf. The school’s gymnasium affectionately known as “The Barn” has a reputation for its electric atmosphere.

Hillsborough High School has produced many notable alumni. These include professional athletes elected officials and renowned figures in various fields. Among its distinguished graduates is Medal of Honor recipient 1st Lt Baldomero Lopez USMC. The school’s alumni network is a testament to its lasting impact on the community.

Over the years Hillsborough High School has undergone renovations and expansions. Major renovations in the mid-1970s and early 2000s restored the high school to its former glory. The school’s impressive athletic center named in honor of former basketball coach Don Williams is a testament to its ongoing commitment to excellence. Today Hillsborough High School continues to serve a diverse student population upholding its rich history and traditions. It remains a cornerstone of the Tampa community.
