Highland Creek Public School has grown over the years. Recently its programs have expanded. Middle Immersion at the Grade 4 level is offered. Extended French is available from Grades 5 to 8. Students from several schools join these programs.

The original Highland Creek Public School was built in 1844. The wood-framed school was located in the valley between 1872 and 1917. A new two-room building was constructed in 1918. Further additions were made between 1949 and 1976. The 1918 section has been designated as a historic structure. It is protected under the Ontario Heritage Act. The opening was delayed until November due to the Spanish Flu outbreak. When it did open, there were 2 teachers and 32 students.
The entrance of the 1918 building features an elliptical fanlight with paired sidelights. This section has a steep-pitched roof. Original windows are on each side of the main entrance. Openings in the masonry are topped by a cream-coloured keystone. Two pillars support the main entrance portico. This 1918 portion was designated as a Heritage Property in 1999. Later additions were set back. The original facade remains prominent. Highland Creek Public School stands as a testament to community and education.
