High Park North. Do you know its story? It’s more than just pretty houses and towering apartment buildings. High Park North is a living timeline. Its streets whisper tales of Indigenous trails and 19th-century settlers.

High Park North. Its history began long before the first European settlers arrived. It sits on the traditional territories of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg. Huron-Wendat and Haudenosaunee peoples also called this land home for centuries. An old trading trail once wound through this very area. You can still trace its path in the names of streets like Indian Road.

High Park North. In 1882 Daniel Clendenan bought land from the Keele estate. He created High Park North as a residential area to serve the growing Toronto Junction. Early homes clustered north and east of Bloor Street. Dundas Street offered easy access to shops and industries. High Park Avenue became home to many affluent Junction residents. Many of their Victorian Edwardian and Tudor homes still stand today.

High Park North. The neighbourhood’s transformation accelerated after World War I. Bloor Street was improved. This made High Park North even more appealing. More homes were built. Many of these charming semi-detached homes are from the early 20th century. They boast beautiful architectural details. Look closely. You will see leaded and stained glass windows. Note the intricate wood trim. Notice the French doors and hardwood floors.

High Park North. A pivotal moment arrived in 1915. A massive public works project transformed Bloor Street. Creeks once crossing the street were buried. A rail trestle was used to support the new roadway. This infrastructure improvement paved the way for further development in High Park North. That same era also saw a remarkable architectural achievement. Jean Hall a Canadian-trained female architect designed the first building in Canada at 63 Jerome Street.

High Park North. The 1960s brought dramatic change. The construction of the Bloor-Danforth subway line spurred development. Many houses north of High Park were demolished. High-rise apartment buildings replaced them. This period was controversial. It raised concerns about displacement and ethical conflicts. Local alderman Ben Grys’s involvement in a development project near his family’s property became a scandal.
