Established in 1999 the High Park Nature Centre is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the power of community and conservation. The Centre sits on 399 acres of land a unique wilderness in the heart of Toronto. It wasn’t always this way. High Park itself has a rich history. It began as a sheep farm owned by John George Howard. He later gifted much of the land to the city. This created High Park.
Before the Nature Centre this land housed the High Park Forest School. Built in 1932 it provided outdoor education for children. The school addressed issues like malnutrition and disease. It closed in 1964. The building however remained. In the mid 1970s it became home to the Ontario Foundation for Visually Impaired Children. This organization used the building until 2014.
Then in 2015 the High Park Nature Centre moved in. The Centre’s mission is clear: to promote awareness and respect for nature. They offer year-round programs. These programs reach over 14000 people annually. Children adults and families all benefit from these programs. School groups and community organizations also participate. The Centre engages visitors in ecological restoration. They plant native species and remove invasive plants like garlic mustard and buckthorn. Over 80000 participants have contributed to High Park’s restoration efforts.
High Park is home to rare plant species including woodland fern-leaf cup plant and wild blue lupine. The black oak savannah is one of the most ecologically significant areas. It represents less than one percent of oak savannah ecosystems globally. High Park’s savannah is the fourth largest remaining remnant. This unique ecosystem needs protection.
