From the crest of High Maunganui, the world stretches out before you. This peak isn’t just a geographical landmark. It’s Mauao, a place woven into the very fabric of Tauranga’s identity. High Maunganui, or Mauao, stands as a silent witness to centuries of history, echoing with Maori legends and whispering tales of human resilience. The mountain, rising 232 meters above the city, offers a breathtaking panorama. You can see the sprawling coastline, the bustling Tauranga Harbour, and the distant Kaimai Ranges. Imagine standing here as Tamatea Arikinui did centuries ago, the captain of the Takitimu canoe. He climbed to the summit of High Maunganui, offering prayers and burying the mauri (life force) of his people. The mountain served as a strategic vantage point and home, with evidence of at least three pa sites discovered on its slopes. High Maunganui has witnessed conflict and peace, from the historic “Battle of the Kokowai” to the later peace treaty with Ngapuhi. Confiscated by the Crown in 1865, the land saw European settlement and the establishment of a pilot and harbormaster station. In 2008, in a gesture of reconciliation, ownership of High Maunganui was returned to the local iwi, the Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngati Ranginui and Ngati Pukenga. Today, High Maunganui is jointly managed by the iwi and the Tauranga City Council. It remains a space freely accessible to the public, a place where roughly a million people walk, run, and connect with nature each year. High Maunganui is more than just a mountain. It is a living testament to the enduring power of nature, the resilience of the human spirit, and the importance of respecting and understanding the stories of the past. As you descend, carry with you the whispers of Mauao, caught in the morning light, a memory etched in the landscape of your journey.
