Higashimurayama’s story stretches back to ancient times. People lived here in the Japanese Paleolithic period. Remnants from the Jōmon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods have been found. In the Nara period, this area was part of Musashi Province. The Battle of Kumegawa happened here in 1333 during the Kamakura period.
After the Meiji Restoration, several villages joined together. They created Higashimurayama Village in 1889. At that time, it was part of Kanagawa Prefecture. In 1893, the entire district became part of Tokyo Prefecture. Higashimurayama became a town in 1942. Then, in 1964, it became a city.
Higashimurayama has changed over the years. Once an agricultural area, it was famous for sweet potatoes. Today, it is a commercial hub and a residential area for people working in central Tokyo.
