Across the vibrant landscape of Vancouver, the Hide Hyodo Shimizu Bridge stands as a quiet testament to a remarkable woman. Hide Hyodo Shimizu’s legacy is deeply intertwined with this bridge. It’s more than just steel and concrete. It represents the enduring power of education and the fight for equality. Hide Hyodo Shimizu was born in Vancouver in 1908. She became a teacher in 1926. She was one of the first second-generation Japanese-Canadians to earn a teaching certificate. Finding a teaching position proved difficult due to the prevalent racism of the time. Eventually, she secured a position at Lord Byng Elementary School in Steveston. She taught kindergarten to Japanese-Canadian children. Interestingly, although she taught these children, she herself didn’t speak Japanese, which initially made teaching quite challenging. During World War II, when Japanese-Canadians were unjustly sent to internment camps, Hide Hyodo Shimizu’s dedication to education shone even brighter. She tirelessly worked to establish schools within these camps. She trained over 50 volunteer teachers. She developed curriculums. She ensured that thousands of children received an education despite the difficult circumstances. This bridge, named in her honor, serves as a reminder of her unwavering commitment to her community and to the power of education. The Hide Hyodo Shimizu Bridge is a symbol of resilience, a tribute to a woman who defied adversity and fought for the rights of her people. It’s a place where we can reflect on the past and be inspired to build a more just and equitable future.
