Originally a parade ground Heldenplatz emerged after the Napoleonic Wars. Parts of the Hofburg Palace’s fortifications were demolished. The resulting open space became a focal point. The grand Kaiserforum project aimed to transform it. Architects like Gottfried Semper envisioned a magnificent imperial forum. This project however remained unfinished. Only parts of the Neue Burg wing were completed.
Two magnificent equestrian statues dominate the square. One depicts Archduke Charles. He famously defeated Napoleon at Aspern in 1809. The other honors Prince Eugene of Savoy a renowned military commander. Both statues were erected in the 1860s. They served to glorify the Habsburg dynasty and its military prowess. The irony is that the Habsburgs suffered crushing defeats at Solferino and Königgrätz shortly after the statues were unveiled.

Heldenplatz’s most infamous moment arrived on March 15 1938. Adolf Hitler stood on the balcony of the Neue Burg. He announced the Anschluss the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany.
