What if I told you this vibrant, almost psychedelic skyscraper before us, the Herkules-Hochhaus, was once deemed so unsightly it received a “Sour Lemon” award? The Herkules-Hochhaus stands tall in Cologne’s Neuehrenfeld district. It was completed in 1969. This building is a striking example of architect Peter Neufert’s vision. He aimed to create “super residential buildings,” a new form of urban living. The Herkules-Hochhaus was Cologne’s first attempt at this concept. Neufert’s signature “systemic architecture” is evident in the building’s facade. The blue, orange, red, and lilac enamelled metal sheets, coupled with the uniquely arranged windows, create a free-flowing rhythm. This design allows for a flexible interior layout. Apartments range from cozy 24 square meter studios to larger three-room units, all offering unique perspectives of the city. The Herkules-Hochhaus boasts 31 floors, housing 427 residential units. A doorman, four elevators, a rooftop swimming pool, a sauna, and a party room add to its appeal. Reaching the 31st floor from the ground takes approximately one minute. Despite its amenities and vibrant appearance, which has earned it the nickname “Parrot House,” the building wasn’t initially popular with Cologne residents. In 2005, the Cologne Tourist Board even awarded it the “Sour Lemon,” criticizing its unconventional aesthetics. However, this colorful giant has become a recognizable postcard motif. The Herkules-Hochhaus also holds a darker story. In 1979, a candle-lit fire on the first floor led to a tragic incident, resulting in one death and a serious injury. Today, the Herkules-Hochhaus is a unique landmark in Cologne’s skyline. Its bold design continues to spark conversation. It stands as a testament to a bold architectural experiment. Its colorful exterior is a symbol of the ever-evolving urban landscape.
