Did Henry Dunant ever imagine a simple marble stele would mark his legacy here in Stuttgart? This Henry-Dunant-Stele, standing 2.4 meters tall, commemorates the founder of the Red Cross. It was unveiled on October 29, 2010. The stele’s broken form symbolizes the fractured lives touched by war. Dunant, a Swiss businessman, witnessed the brutal aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in 1859. The sheer number of wounded and dying soldiers overwhelmed him. He abandoned his business trip and dedicated himself to aiding the suffering. He urged locals to help regardless of which side the soldiers fought for. He organized civilian aid, particularly women and girls. This experience led him to write “A Memory of Solferino.” In this book, he proposed a neutral organization to care for wounded soldiers. This idea sparked the creation of the Red Cross. Dunant shared the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 for his humanitarian work. He never spent the prize money on himself. Instead, he donated it to charities and those who cared for him. He even ensured a free bed at a nursing home for the region’s poor. The Henry-Dunant-Stele in Stuttgart is a quiet tribute to a man whose compassion changed the world. It reminds us of the importance of humanitarian aid and the lasting impact of one man’s vision.
