Didn’t the Henkerknechts-Turm once stand guard over secrets untold? This medieval tower is not just a picturesque landmark. It is a sentinel of Wuerzburg’s past.

The Henkerknechts-Turm. Its name might not roll off the tongue easily. Yet, it holds a significant place in the city’s history. Originally named curia Billungi, the Henkerknechts-Turm was first mentioned in 1180. It was a medieval family tower.

Heinrich Billung and his son Count Eckhart de Foro owned the tower initially. Both men served as mayors of Wuerzburg. The bishop appointed them as the highest judges. Eckhart also acted as deputy to the burgrave. He was the city’s most important episcopal representative. People called him “Count” because of his high reputation. Grafeneckart is named after him. It means the farm of “Count” Eckard.

This building was more than just a residence. It served as the official seat of the city mayor. However, Count Eckhart’s story took a dark turn. He was murdered in 1200. The building changed hands several times thereafter.

In 1453, the council decided to construct a tower. It would rise above the southeast edge of the Grafeneckart. Construction took place between 1453 and 1456. The tower got equipped with a fire and storm bell. A clock was also installed.

Over the following centuries, the building expanded. It became a city castle. This fortified structure aimed to protect the mayor. It also protected his council from attacks and robberies. Council meetings moved to Grafeneckart. They had previously been held in the “Hof zur Sturmglocke”.

Standing 55 meters high, the Henkerknechts-Turm provided a strategic vantage point. It allowed the city’s watchmen to spot approaching threats. The tower’s bells warned citizens of impending danger. It stood as a symbol of Wuerzburg’s resilience.

During the Second World War, the complex suffered severe damage. Restoration and reconstruction efforts continued until 2017. The Henkerknechts-Turm stands as a testament to Wuerzburg’s enduring spirit.

Today, the Henkerknechts-Turm is not open for tours. Yet, its imposing presence dominates the skyline. Its Romanesque architecture evokes a sense of history. It reminds us of Wuerzburg’s rich and complex past. As you gaze upon the Henkerknechts-Turm, consider the countless events it has witnessed. Think of the people who sought refuge within its walls. Reflect on the stories that echo through its stones. The Henkerknechts-Turm remains an enduring symbol of Wuerzburg’s history. It links the city’s medieval roots to its vibrant present.
