What secrets does Heng Fa Chuen hold? This residential marvel, built on reclaimed land from Pak Sha Wan and Lei Yue Mun Bay, has a fascinating past. Heng Fa Chuen, jointly developed by MTR Corporation and Heng Fa Chuen Development, stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s ingenuity. Originally, the MTR station planned for this area was called “Chai Wan Quay”. It was to be near the current Chai Wan pier. But destiny had other plans. When MTR took over the development, the station was relocated and renamed Heng Fa Chuen. The land, once a quarry with remnants visible before the Museum of Coastal Defense was built, was transformed. Reclamation began in 1978, shaping the 15-hectare site that we see today. Interestingly, the airport height restrictions were relaxed in 1984. This change, from 30.48 meters to 60 meters, allowed for the creation of Heng Fa Chuen’s unique skyline. Architects Simon Kwan and Associates, along with Carson Construction, brought the vision to life. A consortium, including Kerry Trading, Kiu Kwong Investment, and Riverkent Limited, joined forces with MTR to form Heng Fa Chuen Development Company. MTR Property Management now oversees the residential blocks. In 1985, the first 448 flats sold out in a single evening, marking the beginning of a new community. By 1986, the first 17 blocks, built atop the Chai Wan Depot, were complete. The depot itself is a marvel, housing the Island line trains. The remaining 31 blocks, closer to Victoria Harbour, were finished a few years later. Heng Fa Chuen is more than just homes. 48 residential blocks, numbered 1 to 50 (skipping 14 and 44 for cultural reasons), house a vibrant community. The Paradise Mall, opened in 1987 and recently renovated, offers an array of sports brands. This outlet mall draws shoppers from all over. Did you know that the world’s 11,000th McDonald’s opened here in 1989? A PARKnSHOP supermarket now stands where Hong Kong’s first Carrefour once did. That Carrefour, a novelty back in 1996, paved the way for the modern shopping experience we have today. Residents of Heng Fa Chuen enjoy a recreation center, a waterfront promenade with views of Tathong Channel, and excellent schools. Lingnan Secondary School and The Salvation Army Ann Wyllie Memorial Primary School serve the educational needs of the community. Four kindergartens provide early childhood education.
