This isn’t about the sun’s intensity, it’s about how long the sun graces us with its presence. The older, manual Heliograf uses a glass sphere. This sphere focuses the sun’s rays onto a special strip of paper. As the sun moves, it burns a trace on the paper, marking the passage of time. Modern Heliografs use a sensor and a slit to measure sunshine. This setup avoids overestimating sunshine due to paper burn-through. The Heliograf’s design cleverly uses the Earth’s rotation to track time. Different grooves on the instrument correspond to different seasons. The lowest groove is for the long summer days. The middle groove is used around the equinoxes. The highest, shortest groove measures the fleeting winter sunshine. A noon mark helps calibrate the instrument for midday measurements. Leveling screws ensure the Heliograf sits perfectly horizontal, usually on a meter-high pedestal, facing south. After sunset each day, the length of the burn mark on the paper is measured. This data is then sent to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute. There, a dedicated team analyzes the results and records the sunshine duration for that location.
