Heirin Temple boasts a history stretching back to 1375 when it was founded by the monk Sekishitsu Zenkyu. Heirin Temple protected a piece of the Musashino Plain’s original forest from encroaching urbanization.

Imagine the temple’s original location. It stood in Iwatsuki Saitama. Sadly it was destroyed in 1590. But Heirin Temple was not defeated. It was rebuilt in 1603. Sixty years later it found its present home in Niiza. This relocation allowed Heirin Temple to remain a guardian of nature.

The temple’s grounds are stunning. Walk through the two-story Sanmon Gate. Built in 1664 it is truly remarkable. The raw wood perfectly complements the moss-covered thatch roofs. Crimson maple trees add splashes of fiery color. The beauty is captivating.

Heirin Temple is more than just stunning architecture. Follow the straight pathways. They lead you through its heart. Discover the Butsuden the pavilion dedicated to Buddha. Nearby is a charming bell tower built in 1750. A peaceful pond is home to graceful koi. A small island houses the Bentendo a monument to Benzaiten the goddess of knowledge beauty arts and music.

Venture deeper. Explore the temple’s extensive forest. You will encounter a graveyard. It holds the remains of important monks. Also there are the tombs of the Matsudaira clan a powerful family during the Edo period.

Wander further into the trees. The crowds thin. You’ll find benches crafted from huge logs. Rest here enjoy the peace. Autumn is magical. The maple leaves ablaze with color. This is forest bathing shinrin-yoku at its finest.

Heirin Temple is a place of peace tranquility and history. It is a testament to the resilience of nature and the enduring spirit of Zen Buddhism. Remember the temple’s story as you leave. Remember its commitment to preserving nature. Heirin Temple awaits your return.
