The Hecht Company Warehouse opened in 1937. It served as the central hub for the Hecht Company department store. The Streamline Moderne design is striking. Black brick and glass block create a beautiful contrast. The glass block is used extensively even forming a twelve-pointed star-shaped cupola. At night this cupola is illuminated making it a landmark. The name “The Hecht Co” is spelled out in black brick and glass block on the fifth floor.

Imagine the activity here during its heyday. Trucks and trains brought in merchandise. Workers sorted and packed goods for delivery. The building even had its own vehicle repair shop. It was cutting edge. It boasted air conditioning on the basement and first two floors. Three railroad platforms facilitated efficient transport.

A significant renovation occurred in 1992. Carefully matching materials were used to preserve the warehouse’s historical integrity. Today the Hecht Company Warehouse is undergoing another transformation. It’s becoming a mixed-use development. The Hecht Warehouse District will combine retail and residential spaces.
