Seventeen years. That’s how long the mesmerizing light display of Heaven illuminated Sydney’s Chinatown. Heaven, a stunning art installation, graced the intersection of Dixon and Little Hay Streets. This wasn’t just any light fixture. It was a glowing disc, woven with fiber optic strands and suspended high above the street. Heaven, designed by artist Peter McGregor, was more than just a visual spectacle. It was a fusion of Chinese architecture, mythology, and philosophy, brought to life with the help of Hassell urban designer Ken Maher and feng shui specialist Howard Choy. From dusk till midnight, Heaven pulsed with vibrant colors. The larger fiber optic strands shifted hues hourly, transitioning from calming purples and blues to energetic greens, yellows, oranges, and finally, a passionate red. Smaller strands danced through the color spectrum every 10 minutes, creating a dynamic, ever-changing display. And at the stroke of midnight, Heaven synchronized with its counterpart, Earth, glowing a brilliant red in unison. This captivating display wasn’t destined to last forever. In 2008 and 2013, due to nearby construction, Heaven was carefully deconstructed. Despite a restoration and reinstallation in 2017, time and the elements took their toll. In 2024, after 27 years of enchanting Sydneysiders and visitors alike, Heaven was decommissioned. While Heaven may be gone, its memory, like the vibrant colors it once displayed, continues to shine brightly in the heart of Chinatown.
