High above us, the wind whispers tales of the sea. These are the rocks where the Harvest Capella met its fate. This is the story of the MFV Harvest Capella shipwreck.

In early October 1987, a 44-meter-long diesel trawler, the Harvest Capella, ran aground here during a fierce south-easterly gale. Imagine the scene. Towering waves crashing against the rocks. The vessel was helpless against the storm’s fury.

Today, only remnants of the Harvest Capella remain. Part of her bow has been pushed onto the rocks by the relentless waves. The wreckage is unstable. It is a harsh reminder of the ocean’s power. Over time, the Harvest Capella has broken apart. In a few years, it may be almost indiscernible.

The Harvest Capella lies on the north side of the Oude Schip headland. The Karbonkelberg peninsula stretches west of Hout Bay. The wreck is fragmented and scattered in shallow water. Winter storms further batter the remains. The reef is relatively flat. Much of the wreckage lies along the bottom of gullies.

Divers often explore the site. The maximum depth is about 15 meters. The average depth is around 10 to 12 meters. Visibility is similar to other sites nearby. It might be a little less due to the shallow depth and shore proximity. The headland shelters the site from south-westerly swells.

Access to the Harvest Capella is usually by boat from Hout Bay harbor. There is no road access nearby. The site lies within the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area since 2004. A permit is required to dive here.

The Harvest Capella site is exposed to north-westerly winds and seas. South-easterly winds offer the best diving conditions. Summer usually provides the best opportunities. Upwellings can occur. These bring clear, cold water, followed by algal blooms and reduced visibility.

Standard recreational diving equipment is adequate. The water is usually cold so a good wetsuit or drysuit is necessary.

Remember to respect the marine environment. Limit your catch and don’t catch your limit.

The Harvest Capella serves as a poignant memorial. It reminds us of the unforgiving nature of the sea. Its scattered remains offer a glimpse into maritime history.
