A silent salute echoes through time at the Hart Flight Memorial. This memorial commemorates William Ewart Hart. He was a native of Parramatta. Hart was also the holder of Australia’s first pilot’s license. But who was William Ewart Hart?

William Ewart Hart was often called Billy. He was born in Parramatta on April 20 1885. His family had deep roots in the area. His father was a timber merchant. Billy went to school in Parramatta and later became a dentist. But his passion was always aviation.

In 1911 Hart purchased a Bristol Box-kite aircraft. He received flying lessons and rebuilt the plane. On November 3 he flew solo. This marked a turning point in Australian aviation history.

Just a few days later on November 18 Hart completed Australia’s first cross-country flight. He flew from Penrith to Sydney in 55 minutes. For this achievement he received a special plaque.

Hart wasn’t just a pilot. He was an innovator. In January 1912 he opened an aviation school in Penrith. He also won Australia’s first air race. The race went from Botany to Parramatta.

Tragedy struck in September 1912. Hart was seriously injured in an accident. This accident effectively ended his flying career.

During World War I Hart served as a lieutenant. He trained fighter pilots. Later he returned to dentistry. He also introduced new dental techniques.

Hart died on July 29 1943. The Royal Australian Air Force flew overhead in salute. He was remembered as a resourceful courageous pioneer.

The Hart Flight Memorial stands as a tribute to his legacy. It reminds us of his contributions to aviation. The memorial reads that on November 4 1911 William Ewart Hart landed his aeroplane after a cross-country flight from Penrith. Parramatta is proud to honor its hero. He also served his country as an Officer of the RFC in the Great War of 1914-18.

Take a moment to appreciate the courage of Billy Hart. He was a true pioneer. His spirit soars above us still.
