Imagine horses elegantly prancing where we stand now. This is the Haras national de Strasbourg. It is a place steeped in equestrian history. The Haras national de Strasbourg stands as a testament to Strasbourg’s rich heritage.

Established in 1756 the Haras was originally the royal stud farm. It was created to supply quality horses for the French economy and army. Before that in 1621 it was an academy of equitation. The academy moved to this site in 1752. Later the royal stud farm joined it. This combined the two authorities.

Jacques Gallay started construction. Clinchamp and Christiani continued his work. They erected the beautiful stable in pink sandstone. Six high arches surround a central avant-corps. The “arms of the king” were once on the triangular pediment.

Napoleon I maintained the Haras. He ensured France had access to the best horses. The Third Republic later renamed it Haras national. The Haras national de Strasbourg is more than just stables. It is a piece of living history.

The site’s architecture is striking. The buildings contrast. The school buildings used brick. The Haras buildings used sandstone. The layout forms a large U around the arena. The site remains intact as shown in an 1836 plan.

By 2016 the national stud farms relocated. In 2009 the City gave management to IRCAD. IRCAD combats digestive system cancers. Denu and Paradon renovated the building. Jouin and Manku designed the space.

The Haras national de Strasbourg has been renovated. It now houses a high-end hotel. There is also a gourmet restaurant and a bar. The renovation aimed to increase attractiveness. It also promotes economic growth.

IRCAD uses profits to support its research. The Haras national de Strasbourg is now open to the public. Once inaccessible, it welcomes everyone. IRCAD also established a Biocluster here. The Biocluster fosters technology transfer. This benefits the medical and surgical fields.

The Haras national de Strasbourg plays multiple roles. It preserves history and fosters innovation. It supports medical research. It also welcomes visitors.
