In the heart of Vienna’s Türkenschanzpark, you’ll find a solemn tribute, a bronze bust perched on a pedestal. This is the Hansl-Schmid-Denkmal, a memorial to a true Viennese legend. Hans Schmid, a man synonymous with the Wienerlied, the traditional music of Vienna, captured the hearts of the city for decades. His voice, a rich baritone, sang tales of love, loss, and the everyday joys and sorrows of Vienna.

He was born in 1897, in the very same Ottakring district where the Volksoper, Vienna’s folk opera, now stands. He wasn’t a trained musician but rather a seasoned merchant. Yet, his love for the Wienerlied was evident in every performance. He brought it to the common man, gracing bustling Heurigen taverns with his warm, familiar sound. In a time of deep political turmoil, when Vienna was divided among four different nations, he offered solace through the beauty of his music.

His legacy lives on here in this monument. The bronze likeness, sculpted by Rudolf Friedl, exudes a sense of warmth and affection. Hansl Schmid, the last lord of the Wienerlied, his legacy is etched in the hearts of Vienna. It whispers through the park, carried on the wind and in the laughter of children playing nearby. It’s a testament to the power of music to transcend hardship and bring a city together.
