Gazing across Hammarbyleden, one might mistake it for a natural waterway. But this vital link between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea’s Saltsjön is a testament to human ingenuity. Hammarbyleden’s story is one of transformation, a marriage of nature and engineering that reshaped Stockholm’s southern edge. Officially opened in 1929, Hammarbyleden isn’t a single canal. It’s an intricate network of existing natural water bodies, painstakingly expanded and dredged over a decade. This ambitious project involved not just carving a new path for ships but also constructing a lock, Hammarby Lock. This lock is crucial. It manages the varying water levels between the freshwater lake and the salty Baltic Sea. Our journey along Hammarbyleden begins at Liljeholmsviken, nestled at Lake Mälaren’s eastern edge. From there, the waterway flows eastward into Årstaviken. Here, at Årstaviken’s eastern end, we find Hammarby Lock, the gatekeeper of Hammarbyleden. Passing through the lock, we descend into Hammarby Sjö, or Hammarby Lake. The final leg of our journey takes us through the Danvik Canal. This historic canal completes the connection, delivering us into the bustling waters of Saltsjön, near the Masthamnen wharf. The creation of Hammarbyleden also spurred the development of a new port, Hammarbyhamnen, and surrounding industrial areas. While the heavy industry has since faded, the area has been reborn. Today, the former industrial heartland thrives as Hammarby Sjöstad, a vibrant residential district. So, as you stand along Hammarbyleden’s banks, remember, you are witnessing not just a waterway but a story of ambition, innovation, and Stockholm’s ever-evolving landscape.
