Ham Tin Wan Campsite is located in Sai Kung East Country Park. It is a perfect spot to experience coastal scenery. The campsite also offers a panoramic view of Sharp Peak.
Ham Tin Wan is one of the four main bays of Tai Long Wan. It is known as ‘Tai Long four bays’. These bays are captivating coastal attractions in Hong Kong.
Getting to Ham Tin Wan Campsite requires some effort. It is best suited for experienced hikers and campers. From Sai Kung Bus Terminal you can take Bus 94. Alternatively, take Bus 96R from Diamond Hill MTR Bus Terminal on Sundays and public holidays. You can also take Minibus 7 from Sai Kung Town. Get off at Pak Tam Au stop. Follow the MacLehose Trail Stage 2 towards Chek Keng and Tai Long Au. After about a 2-hour walk, you will arrive at Ham Tin Wan Campsite.
Don’t worry if hiking is not your thing. There’s an easier way to reach Ham Tin Wan. Take the MTR to Hang Hau station. Then take the green minibus 101 to Sai Kung Pier. From there, a water taxi can take you directly to Ham Tin Wan. Negotiate the price beforehand. It should cost around HK$130-150 per person per way. Sharing the boat with others makes it cheaper.
Once you arrive at Ham Tin Wan Campsite, you will find several facilities. There are wind-resistant cooking pits for preparing meals. Flushing toilets are available about 200 meters from the campsite. Tap water is also accessible.
Ham Tin Wan itself is more than just a campsite. It’s a part of Ham Tin Tsuen. This village faces the bay. Ham Tin Tsuen has a history of over 150 years. The Wan clan has inhabited the village for about 7 or 8 generations. They moved from northern China a long time ago. About 150 years ago, three Wan brothers settled in different areas of the New Territories. One settled in Tai Po Tsai. Another settled in Ho Chung. The third brother settled in Ham Tin Tsuen. He is believed to be the founding ancestor of the village.
From Ham Tin Wan Campsite, you can admire Sharp Peak. It towers 468m above the lowlands. Sharp Peak is formed by volcanic rock. It is a prominent landmark in Sai Kung East Country Park.
Remember to book your return boat trip from Ham Tin. Several speedboat companies offer services. Check with the shop or a stand near the bridge. Schedules depend on demand and weather conditions.
